One for my therapy colleagues… In this profession I’ve done a lot of writing about things I’m against. This has always been in defence of what to me is most precious about counselling and psychotherapy, but there has still been a kind of oppositional energy about it. So I’ve long wanted to write more about what I am for – and I’ve finally got round to it. This piece on my new therapy blog (link in bio and a few snippets in the slides above) has its roots in working as a supervisor, where I have not infrequently found myself trying to articulate what might be lost when therapists reach for tools, techniques, guidance and psychoeducation. It is about not-knowing, deep listening, bearing witness to distress, and creating the conditions for an unfolding of what is hidden, entangled and emergent. It is about the relational art of good therapy. Ultimately, it is about trust, humility and hope. In the article I’ve also indulged my passion for music (and music writing) because over the years I’ve found that the arts often articulate the nuance, depth and complexity of the human condition better than any therapy theory. There is some therapy theory too, though. By online standards it’s a long-ish read (15 minutes?) — I hope some of you will take the time and that the time feels well spent! Great location for meeting with my Independent Practitioners Network (IPN) group in Ealing yesterday. For anyone not familiar with IPN it emerged in the 90s to offer a non-hierarchical accountability framework as an alternative to the increasingly bureaucratic and top-down professional bodies in counselling & psychotherapy. My group are a small bunch of therapists with decades of experience and different theoretical backgrounds. We come from across the south of England, from Dorset to London (and Belgium!) to meet every few weeks to discuss practice, profession, politics and personal experience, offering each other mutual support and challenge and sharing a hearty lunch. The “protest despair detachment” flip chart in the pic was not ours (it happened to be in another room and caught my eye) but these are themes we could and would address! For me IPN distills some of the best relational aspects of peer-led personal development & discussion groups, peer supervision, encounter groups, activist support… without being any of those things. I’m still a member of a mainstream registering body (BACP) but my IPN group really enriches and supports my practice so I would recommend it to others. Got a real sense of Rothko’s ambition to articulate the big themes and emotions of life. Seems silly in a way to photograph them because they’re so different IRL but there you go!

Mixture of heavy and not quite so heavy… 📚🙂 If you want something contemporary and deeply philosophical to really sink your thinking into, then The Plague looks at death (via Covid and the Ukraine war) through the lenses of Albert Camus, Sigmund Freud & Simone Weil. Think Like a Therapist has a lighter touch but is nonetheless profound in its own way. It’s not a book I’d normally pick up (I probably think like a therapist enough already!) but it’s full of hard-earned insights into life, meaning and self drawn from Stephen’s own experience, as well as psychological research, Buddhism, philosophy and (unusually for a ‘self-help’ text) the theory and practice of Carl Rogers’ person-centred therapy. Trauma & Recovery is considered something of a classic text that I’ve just got round to exploring. Unlike many thinkers in this area, Judith Herman places the personal “aftermath of violence and terror” firmly in the context of society and power, rather than just individual psychology, and has a deep faith in the power of relationships to aid recovery. The Nick Cave book I’m yet to start but having heard a couple of recent interviews with him (and being a fan of his intensely moving album inspired by grief, Ghosteen) I’m looking forward to delving deeper into his thoughts on life, loss, hope and… everything! #therapistsconnect #counselling #psychotherapy #therapybooks

A deeply humanistic and morally nuanced story of loss, abandonment, violence and oppression in the life of a teenage girl caught in the care system. It’s also a novel of hope, escape, transcendence, the redemptive potential of relationships and the label-defying intricacy of our internal worlds. The wounded but mighty protagonist, Anais, is a playful, wise and incendiary joy to spend time with. Thoroughly recommend!

Location

I’m based in a quiet, comfortable and discreet office in a non-residential building where some other therapists work too. This is in Chequers Road, Basingstoke RG21 7PU, which is a short distance from the town centre and the bus and train stations. The nearest free parking is on Eastrop Lane. There are car parks close by at Red Lion Lane, Festival Place and Waitrose.

I work on the ground floor but there are two steps up to the building’s front door.
